The first book asks how you carry authority. The second asks what carrying it is doing to you.

The Servant and the Sword is a two-book series about the character, judgment, and responsibility that come with wearing the badge. Grounded in a biblical worldview and informed by more than 25 years in law enforcement, it is written for men and women at every stage of the job, whatever they believe about God.

Part 1: Courage, Character, and Effective Policing

Part 1 examines the calling to serve, the character behind our decisions, and how we see and treat the people in front of us. Its four sections explore humility, integrity, self-control, human dignity, and the courage to protect. The question is how to use the authority in your hands with restraint and sound judgment, even when the call is difficult.

Part 2: Restraint, Leadership, and Finishing Well

Part 2 turns to what the work does to the officer. Its three sections examine anger, cynicism, the weight of difficult calls, and what follows you home. It also considers how you lead and correct other officers, the example you set with or without rank, and the person who remains when the career ends.

Together, these books ask more than whether a decision was lawful or within policy. They ask whether you told the truth, treated people fairly, kept the sword under control, and remained someone your family and fellow officers could trust.

For the rookie, the veteran, the supervisor, and the officer preparing for the last shift.

Robert Thompson has served in law enforcement for over 25 years.

He came on the job the way most officers do. He expected danger, long nights, and people who would not be happy to see him. He expected to learn the law, policy, and how to work under pressure. What took longer to see was what the work does to the person wearing the badge.

After more than two decades, that is the part he writes about. Not because tactics do not matter. They do. The book is about the other half of the job: the tone you use after someone curses you, the report you could shade, the silence you keep when another officer is wrong, and the slow habits that can pass for experience. Pride can look like command presence. Cynicism can look like wisdom. Anger can feel like part of the work. None of those are the same as doing the job well.

The Servant and the Sword is written for officers, from the street to the people who supervise them. Thompson writes as a Christian, because that is the ground he stands on, and he writes for men and women. The book is not only for the Christian officer. Pride, cynicism, anger, and the weight of the job do not check a person's beliefs before they show up. It is for any officer who wears the badge and wants to stay effective, tell the truth, and still be able to live with the work, whatever they believe about God.

It is not a sermon, and it is not a tactics manual. The law still has to be followed. The call still has to be handled. The question underneath both is what kind of person is left when the radio goes quiet.

The badge is borrowed. The person wearing it is not.
